Breast Augmentation: Common Questions

How long will I be off work?
Doctors recommend usually a few days to one week if you do not do any heavy lifting or repetitious arm movements.

What will my restrictions be after surgery?
For the first one to two weeks we recommend not lifting more than a gallon of milk or a six pack of soda. Avoid activities that could lead to being bumped or hit in the chest area.

How soon can I drive?
After about a week if you are no longer taking any prescribed pain medication.

How will doctor know what size I should be?
You will try on sizers made by the implant company. Then you and your physician will determine final size.

Where will the surgery take place?
Southwest Surgical Suites, a highly accredited surgery center partially owned by physicians and Lutheran Hospital, will be the location of your breast augmentation surgery.

Do I have to be put to sleep?
Our physicians do prefer a general anesthesia performed by a Board Certified Anesthesiologist. Under specific circumstances they might consider a local with Intravenous Sedation.

Can I drive myself to surgery?
No you will need someone with you over the age of eighteen. You will also need someone with you for the first twenty four hours after the anesthesia.

Where is the incision made?
Incisions are on the underside of the breast just above the crease, or around the areola.

How do I know which type of implant is best for me?
We offer both the saline and the gel implants. Your surgeon will tell you about both and help decide which is better for you.

How long does the surgery take?
One and a half to two hours. Then after an hour or so of recovery, you may go home.

Can I still breast feed?
The surgery does not affect the milk producing glands. However, there is no guarantee you will be able to nurse.

Are there specific risks with breast implants?
A capsular contracture may occur. The body develops a scar capsule around the implant. This capsule can become tight and press on the implant causing firmness, discomfort, and changes in appearance. If severe enough this could require more surgery to remove the scar tissue and/or replace the implant. There is no way to predict who might encounter this complication.

Will the breast augmentation give me more cleavage?
The implants enlarge your breasts but do not change the position on your chest. Cleavage is accomplished by a bra that pushes up and/or in.

What if I get pregnant after my breast augmentation surgery?
Your breasts will still get bigger during pregnancy, possibly causing discomfort, stretch marks, as well as loose skin.

Do implants affect mammograms and the ability to check for breast cancer?
Implants do make mammograms a little more involved. Most imaging facilities do an extra view for women with implants. Implants placed under the muscle interfere less with mammograms than those placed over the muscle. Your physician usually requires a recent mammogram before surgery as a baseline for later comparisons.
